On May 17, we celebrate Global Recycling Day with the purpose of raising awareness about the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling. This is one way to increase resource efficiency and minimize impacts on nature and climate.

Our packaging is essential for our products in order to maintain the quality and safety necessary to reach our consumers in the best conditions and to avoid the food waste throughout the value chain, we ensure that our materials are simply recycled as well as develop the necessary mechanisms and alliances in the countries where we operate to direct them to a post-consumer recycling at the end of its useful life.

Therefore, our goal for 2030 will be that the 100% of our packaging will support a circular economy and we want to achieve it through:

  • Plastic reduction
  • New plastic technologies
  • Post consumption alliances

In response to this commitment, we work with the Consumer Goods Forum in the coalition of plastics where defined, in conjunction with other manufacturing and trade companies, issues to reduce the impact of plastics such as circular economy design and principles.

Also as part of Grupo Bimbo’s commitments on sustainability, we decided to expand the scope of our work with Earthworm Foundation and support on the implementation of our responsible sourcing journey on pulp and paper.

The pulp and paper that we use for the packaging and promotion of our products can come from virgin fibres or recycled fibres, each representing different challenges and opportunities to protect, restore and enhance forest values and worker and community rights. Both will be taken on consideration on this journey.

In 2022 the focus of our work is the following: · Analyzing our Global Agriculture Policy to incorporate commitments specific to pulp and paper.

  • Running a supply chain mapping exercise with selected suppliers to identify the origins of virgin fiber and the sources of fiber used by the recovered fiber mills in our supply.
  • Assessing the potential risks associated to the sourcing countries identified during the supply chain mapping process; and
  • Analyzing the information generated to identify potential transformation projects in virgin and recovered fiber supply chains where we can collaborate with other peers and stakeholders to make progress on addressing our sustainability challenges.
  • Strategic suppliers are invited to participate in the Forest Module of the CDP Supply Chain Program to disclose relevant information about good practices regarding sustainable practices in protection of Forests.

This work will build on our existing commitment to source 100% certified or recycled cardboard by 2025, where we have accomplished 75% to date. We look forward to communicating about our work and ongoing progress and positive impact on nature climate and people’s wellbeing in accordance with our commitments.
